What is TENCEL™ and why is it important in towels?
I had the same questions as you in 2018. What the heck is TENCEL™? More importantly, why do I need it?
TENCEL™ is the brand name for a type of Lyocell - as is Kleenex for facial tissues or Xerox for photocopies. TENCEL™ is a form of rayon that consists of fibers made from cellulose found in wood pulp. It's been around for awhile, but recently it's become a popular material due to it's many benefits:
- Comes from plant materials
- Gentle on your skin
- Reduced bacterial growth
- Color maintenance
- Moisture reduction
- Better breathability
- Material strength
Adheer Bahulkar, a partner at global retail-consulting firm A.T. Kearney said, "Lyocell is composed of nanofibrils — literally very, very small fibers — which are hydrophilic," he said. "This gives Tencel unique moisture absorption ability, which in turn makes [it] breathable, softer, [and] less prone to wrinkles."
In the opinion of the Eiffel Towel team members, we felt that the most important part of TENCEL™ was it's eco-friendliness of its material composition.
Here's the sustainable TENCEL™ process in a nutshell:
- The fibers originate from the wood pulp.
- The fibers are then manufactured using a more responsible process using less water, less energy and using less dyes and creating less waste.
- It is certified as compostable and biodegradable and can go back to nature
Listed above are some of the benefits of an Eiffel Towel which are made with a blend of TENCEL™ and Organic Cotton. Why should you get an eco-friendly towel like Eiffel Towel? That's up to you, but we're hoping you do.
